New Limited Release: Burundi Mahonda
Introducing our latest limited release: Burundi Mahonda.
Mahonda is an extraordinary coffee that comes from a high elevation washing station. This washing station has been a cup of excellence contender and winner. A group of about 40 farmers from this area produce this coffee.
Gitega Province is the very centre of Burundi. It is a mountainous area with
temperatures ranging from 12 to 18°C on average. Rainfall is lower than in other parts of Burundi, at around 1,100 mm per year.
Mahonda was one of the last washing stations to open in the area, because at this elevation, while flowering happens at the same time as other trees in the central region, cherries take longer to mature. That extra time generates more complex sugars, bringing a natural sweetness to the coffee. Cooler weather also means a longer fermentation period of 16 to 18 hours rather than the standard 12 to 14 hours of others. The washing station recently installed a clean tap water system.
A sweet berry aroma with soft round body. Citric acidity with apricot notes and a smooth cocoa finish.
